2006 Washington Salmon Run Results
The 2006 Washington Salmon Run provided the Salmon Run Committee with a learning experience – it was our first time accepting Cabrillo format logs. These came in abundance along with text-file logs, Excel logs, other electronic formats, plus paper logs, lists and others. The challenge was to review all the submitted data and put it into a consistent format. Jack, WAØRJY, took on the paper and “non-Cabrillo” logs while Brian, N9ADG, wrote software to read and analyze the Cabrillo logs (“not all Cabrillos are created equal,” said Brian). We quickly found that the Claimed Scores calculated by the logging programs did not match our scoring calculations and many logs were reviewed line by line to determine the correct scoring. Please review the Salmon Run Rules for scoring logs if you have any concerns. After Jack and Brian did their work, Jim, K7WA, put together the Results. Rick, K7LOG, printed the certificates and Harry, K7LAZ, mailed out the awards and certificates. Ward, NØAX, Kirk, N7UK, and Denny, W7SNH, assisted the committee as well. This was a “climbing the learning curve” year; we’ll do better with the results in 2007! Out of Washington Highlights: We received 107 logs from stations outside Washington this year, we appreciate every one! California provided the High Power (W6AFA) and Low Power (W6RCL) Top Scores, separated by LESS THAN ONE QSO! Unfortunately, W6RCL became a Silent Key in December; Alan’s contributions to the amateur radio community will be missed! The Out of WA Low Power Plaque will be awarded in his memory. WØPQ in Nebraska had the QRP Top Score, VE7NH in Canada and HA1AG for DX topped their competitors. Thanks to Out of WA Low Power Plaque donor N7UK.
Washington State HighlightsThe perennial problem is getting all the counties on the air; this year we came up a few short. But WN7T certainly did his part! After hitting an elk and totaling his truck in the 2005 Salmon Run, Paul drove through thirteen counties from the Olympic Rainforest in the west to the Columbia Basin in central Washington in 2006 to post the Top Mobile score. Bonus Station W7DX was Multi-Op 2 Transmitters from Island County this year; other high scores from Island County were N7YX (plus N6HR) in the Multi-Op Single Transmitter category, and K7RL in Single-Op. K7WA/7 posted the high County Expedition score. Once again, K7QQ had the Top Score of all Washington stations; Rex is an enthusiastic contester and we appreciate his support of the Salmon Run! EWA Low Power Plaque winner K7OX and WWA Low Power winner K7INA had a close race, K7LAZ topped the WA CW entries and N7ZG topped competitive King County. K7TQ led the WA QRPers and KE7FKX was Top WA YL. For the first time we had a Digital Mode Winner, KD7KST. The Radio Club of Tacoma, W7DK, was Top WA Club Station in 2006; RCT stalwart W7BUN became a Silent Key this year, Jerry is another advocate of amateur radio who will be missed. Thanks to EWA Low Power Plaque donor The Spokane DX Association , and WA Club Plaque donor K7WA.
