2010 Washington Salmon Run

The 2010 Washington Salmon Run, held September 18th and 19th, marked the improving propagation conditions with increased activity from Washington stations, several expeditions to usually rare counties, and an overwhelming operation from the Western Washington DX Club station, W7DX.  We received 266 logs, 110 from Washington stations and a 156 from out of state, including 8 from Canada and 11 from DX stations.  This could be called the “Year of the Rookie”, with several operators new to ham radio or new to the Salmon Run, providing many contacts this year.

While Mobile operations were down this year (with the exception of K7ED/m and WB9TCY/m Single-Operators and KK7JL Multi-Operator), Expedition and Rover stations provided many of the usually rare counties.  W7QC led the Expedtiton category, and portable operations from Kittitas, Ferry, San Juan, Pend Oreille, Skamania, Pacific, Yakima, Douglas and Grays Harbor put these counties into many logs.  While it’s difficult to cover all the counties, especially the “terrible trio” in the southeast corner (Asotin, Garfield, and Columbia), we’ll keep at it.  In spite of a lot of effort by many stations, only two single-operators worked all 39 counties this year:  N7UK and W7NNN.  Multi-op station W7DX also worked all 39.  W6RA topped the out-of WA participants with 37 from nearby Oregon.

The WWDXC Bonus station, W7DX, was operated this year by members and friends of the WWDXC and South Hill Contest Club (N7PP).  Their goal was to have W7DX in every log, and they almost made it with totals of 1119 CW, 1543 Phone, and 248 Digital contacts, certainly an all-time Salmon Run record!  Thanks go to all the operators and station hosts N7BV (CW), W7IJ (Phone), K7BTW (Digital), and AB7R (6 meters).

Operators new to the Salmon Run made outstanding efforts this year, especially W7LEA (also Top Score YL), K7H, WB9TCY, AD7BF, K7GA and many others.  It’s encouraging to have so many new participants contributing to the activity!  The Rookie of the Year Award this year goes to K7H.  They obtained a special event call and did an expedition to usually rare Skamania county near Mount St Helens, making 341 Phone QSOs.  Congratulations to the K7H operators:  AE7MK, KD7WNV, N8JD, and K7CJK.

We had a lot of support from Washington Clubs this year, as Club Station entries and encouraging members to get on the air.  The Radio Club of Tacoma (W7DK) combines the Salmon Run with new operator training and fund raising, other clubs go out for expeditions or operate from fixed stations.  Special thanks go to WX7P and KB7HDX for spreading the word in Eastern Washington and getting several stations on the air.

Out of Washington Results:

K9YC led the out of Washington stations this year and W6AFA was right behind; both operated from California and put good signals into Washington on all bands.  NT2A, KO7X, and WA3HAE also made excellent scores from out of state.  K7TQ was the top out of state QRP operator.  VE3GXW repeated as Canadian Top Score, and DX stations LW3EX, SP5SA, and IK4CIE all qualified for Salmon Awards.  It’s quite a thrill to be operating portable or mobile and have a DX station call – these guys really are appreciated!

In Washington Results:

The WA Top Ten chart shows there are many ways to make a top score.  W7VV (with operators W7VV, VE7XF, and NØAX) did it as multi-single, as did W7GKF.  K7QQ made his usual excellent single-operator score on CW, with NG7Z second in single-operator using Mixed modes..  W7DK was multi-2 transmitters, while W7NNN and W7LEA made great scores on Phone.  K7INA made the top low power score.  As the Salmon Run has become more popular the top ten has become much more competitive!
