July Club Picnic 7/22

By | July 13, 2023

Our annual July Meeting / Summer Picnic will take place July 22 this year at the Kitchen Shelter at Fort Warden in Port Townsend. The shelter will be open 9AM to sunset, with lunch from MoChili served to registered guests around noon. This is a great time to meet new club members, relax on the beach or in the shelter, fly your favorite kite antenna, and activate a POTA site all at the same time. The registration deadline to be included for the food count is July 17.

The cost including a BBQ lunch is $30 per adult, while minor children with ham licenses and minors under 10 are free.  Minors aged 10-17 with no ham license are $10. The cost to park in the State Park is included in your Washington State parks pass, or a $10 day pass can be purchased at the automated pay station on site. If you would like to attend and not eat, or bring your own picnic lunch, there’s no need to pre-register. We hope to see you all there!

What do I need to do to attend?

For those interested in joining us for lunch from MoChili, (club member or not, everyone is welcome!) please register by July 17 via PayPal or by sending a check to the WWDXC. For those with PayPal accounts, the WWDX club PayPal email address is treasurer@wwdxc.org. In your account, click “pay or send money.”  Then click “pay for goods or services” and in the box that asks for email or mobile number enter “treasurer@wwdxc.org” and proceed. Where it says “add a note” be sure to enter your callsign and how many adults and children.

For those who prefer to send checks the address is:

Western Washington DX Club
PO Box 395
Mercer Island, WA 98040

After sending your check, please email Robin to make sure you’re on the list for food, in case we don’t receive your check before the food ordering cutoff date of July 17.

More Details

We will have access to the kitchen shelter from 9 am to sundown. The barbecue selections from Mo Chili will arrive around noon. Beverages will be provided for those registered and will be available when we get into the shelter.

Directions

Here is a Google Maps link to the site, and here is a printable PDF map that shows the Kitchen Shelter at Fort Warden. It is shown on the extreme top right of the printable map.

For those driving, you will enter the main gate at W Street and Cherry and turn right on Eisenhower Drive towards the east. You will turn left at the T on Harbor Defense Way, facing the water and Whidbey Island. Drive past the Marine Science Center to find the Kitchen Shelter on the right across from RV parking. You won’t necessarily see the Kitchen Center building on the Google map on your phone, but the building says Kitchen Shelter. I will have a balloon to help it be spotted. I might also remember to bring my goofy Amateur Radio Is Fun Sign. We might also have the WWDXC banner. You can see there are plenty of indoor tables as well as outdoor tables. There is a refrigerator and an oven. Bring a Washington State Parks Pass for your vehicle or purchase a day pass at an automated pay station, $10.

Transportation

Anyone needing a ride into the park, please let me know by email and provide your cell number, as I have a driver lined up. Some will be parking RVs and getting a ride, others arriving by foot at the Port Townsend Ferry. There is still time to register and pay for the picnic up until July 17. It’s going to be fun seeing everyone! The views from the site are spectacular! FYI the boat launch at Fort Warden is closed indefinitely.

Weather

We’ll be meeting rain or shine. We have the covered picnic shelter all day. You can check on the weather forecast here or here.
